Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Each time a prominent awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
